What is genuinely well-documented

Greek isopsephy's role in ancient magical, philosophical, and early Christian contexts, including the "number of the beast" debate, is likewise a documented feature of the historical record. As a textual and cultural phenomenon, gematria is unambiguously real.

Where the pseudoscience critique applies

The critique isn't aimed at gematria's history — it's aimed at a modern claim: that gematria can function as a predictive or investigative tool, revealing hidden truths about current events, public figures, or the future by matching numeric values. This use lacks a testable mechanism, isn't falsifiable in any meaningful sense, and hasn't been supported by controlled study. Skeptics additionally point out that with enough ciphers and enough flexibility in what counts as a "match," almost any two words or phrases can be made to produce a shared or "meaningful" number — a form of the same reasoning error found in other numerology-adjacent practices.
